Smith Optics Technical Guide

We have just been hit with the hot new range of I/O Ski goggles from Smith Optics! In case you didn’t know why these goggles are so sick, here is a technical guide showing you what makes Smith Optics the right choice for you this winter.

Interchangeable Lens System- The I/O is the world leader in this category, providing you with the simplest and most efficient way to change your lenses, you simply pop open the two clasps at the top of the goggle, pop the lens out and replace it with a new one, simple.

Evolve Technology- In 2008 Smith Optics made a ground breaking step from an environmentally friendly point of view making then goggle from 96% reground urethane. Which is Utilized using recycled materials from other companies. And now Smith operate a system using Pearlthane ECO bio-TPU. And for you guys who aren’t quite up to speed on your Pearlthane ECO bio-TPU, it’s a material that is made up of 40% bio based material, which is derived from plant based oils which is separate from the worlds food supply. Long story short, this material uses 40% less global warming emissions to make than traditional urethane.

Tapered Lens Technology- Looking at an object through a lens should look exactly the same as looking at an object without a lens, with other goggles, if light passes through the lens, it often refracts which can cause eye fatigue and distortion. Smith’s Tapered Lens Technology gradually tapers the light as it passes through the lens into the optical centre and into the riders peripheral line of vision. Basically this means that not all the light coming through your lens isn’t as harsh as it would be if it refracted, giving you the best possible vision.

Technology vaporator lens technology with porex filter- This industry leading technology isn’t as confusing as it sounds, this technology was originally created for aerospace and medical purposes, but Smith have adapted it to the world of snowsports, the lenses are robotically cut for optimum precision and are bonded together with a tiny silicone bead that’s been specifically designed to cease the process of Delamination. The process that makes our goggles fog up! This is then finished off with the extremely clever Porex filter, which is built to make sure that air can pass through the filter, but water can’t. This means that the thermal lens is able to adjust to various different altitudes, whilst preventing water vapour to get between the lenses. AKA, the world’s strongest thermal lens barrier.
